It was good. I liked it.
Oh, you probably wanted more than that.
Like Dumbo, this isn’t an adaptation of another story (although it is based on an original character that the director Chris Sanders created about two decades earlier for a storybook idea that never got off the ground). Also, apparently, its production was heavily inspired by Dumbo (in the sense that Disney wanted to produce a lower-budget film to help offset costs from several more expensive projects during the 1990s, and the aesthetic decision to use water color paints instead of gouache mimics what was done with the earlier film).
And yet, for all those similarities, I like this movie way better.
It might have something to do with the plot. And the positive depiction of non-white people. And the sensitive consideration of non-traditional families. And the humor (I found this film to be hilarious).
Anyway, that’s all for today (a post shorter than a thousand words?! Shocking!). I’ve been chipping away at my next post for Paradise Lost, so maybe I’ll get that up sometime this week.
